Peak Marn Review

I came across Peak Marn and I thought, "Oh, Num!" Let's watch it! I am a big fan of Num, his voice, his sincerity, and his eyes. He's got such tender eyes and I fell in love with him when I first watched him in Ban Saithong. Well, I got a surprise when I watched Peak Marn (Satan's Wings). He stars with Orijna (Pang) in one of his most unliked roles yet. PooChai (Num) is a grown man who lives with his mother. He's a manager at a bank and is in love with the girl of his dreams, Salia (Orijna). He and Salia agree to marry and on the day that he brings her home to meet his mother, he finds his mother arguing with a man who he finds out is his father. His father tells him that the reason why he couldn't be with his mother was because she didn't allow any breathing room for anyone but her. PooChai was raised by his mother, so he doesn't see this as a reason enough to break apart from the relationship. Salia doesn't get to meet his mother and they reschedule for another time, and another time, and another due to his mother always getting ill. Salia thinks PooChai is caring and a gentleman because he cares for his mother, even though others like her mother, brother, and friend warn her to rethink marriage.

When they finally meet and PooChai releases the bomb that he's going to marry her, all hell breaks loose. His mother, a jealous, greedy, and bat from hell, unleashes all anger on Salia, refusing to allow PooChai to spend any time with him, even on their wedding night. She pretends to fall down the stairs, faint, or gets a heart attack to keep PooChai close to her. And being the boy she molded from birth, the only thing PooChai can say when his mother does this is, "Khrap, Ma." (Yes, Mom). When Salia finds out she's pregnant, she's left alone while her husband tends to his mother from first trimester until delivery. He misses the birth of his first child and pretty soon, Salia realizes what kind of man she's married to. He can't separate his mother from his wife and would take on his mother's pain and health instead of his wife's. A month later, she is sent to work in Ban Chieng and she goes because she believes they need the time apart. But before leaving, she tells Poochai that when she returns, they will get a divorce.

While on the trip away from home, she meets Laiseu, a young undergrad student in the Archeology department where she works. He's there to study with his friends and professor. Although he knows she's married, has a child, and is older than he is, he can't help, but fall in love with her. He begins to chase after her and finds her so attractive that he goes crazy for her. With the strain on her marriage, Salia feels like she's being led into a direction where her heart would betray her if she isn't strong enough. She's worried about what she would do if she does give in and begins an affair with Laiseu. She finds him attractive, attentive, and charming after her failing marriage. During their time spent together, Laiseu tells her that he wants her to divorce her husband, marry him, and they can live in peace.

When they return back home, Salia takes her child back all the while PooChai is left still wondering what he did wrong. He can't figure out his mistake while his mother is constantly hounding on him about how low of a wife Salia is. Once again, he can't make his own decisions, so he lets his mother's voice do it for him. But things take a turn for the worse when one afternoon, PooChai sees Laiseu and Salia together. Consumed with hatred, jealousy, and anger, PooChai ends up leaving bruises and raping his own wife. Filled with hurt and guilt, he returns home while she is admitted to the hospital. The strain on their marriage breaks and Salia hates PooChai afterwards with a deepness she never thought she could.

Can Poochai reclaim himself and grow up to be a man without his mother's voice in his head? Can he take back the family he lost? Will he stop listening to his mother? Will he own up to his own words and become the man he is supposed to be? Will Salia give in to her heart and see Laiseu for the prince charming he is? Will Laiseu be able to prove to Salia that he's the one for her? Watch Peak Marn and discover for yourself the truth that sometimes blinds us when love becomes our weakness.
