Distant Hope 5

The evening air was cooler as Jedidiah pushed Bea toward her house. After the birthday party, his mother and Bea had gotten into a long discussion about their good old days. Lizzie was now sleeping and his mother asked him to walk Bea home. He wasn’t happy about it because for one, he’d have to see Anna and he felt what had occurred this afternoon was odd enough as it was. He wasn’t sure how he’d react if she was sitting on the front porch when he arrived.             “You’re awfully quiet,” Bea said.             Jedidiah’s hand tightened on the wheelchair handlebars. “I am?”             Bea sighed. “I know why she ran. She’s been hiding since she arrived. She’s scared, Jedidiah. You have to give her some time.”             “I’m not sure I understand.”             “Do you know what kind of life she led before she came here?”             Shaking his head, he answered, “No.”             “I won’t talk much because it’s not my place. But she wasn’t able to find hap

Vera laughed and she pinched his cheek. “Jedidiah, I’m not getting any younger. I’d like to know that if something were to happen to me, you’d be taken care of and so will Lizzie.”             “I know that and I understand. But after what happened, I’m not going to risk anything.”               The house was silent as Jedidiah sat in the darkened living room going through the old photos of him and Anna. He didn’t need to look through them, honestly, her face had imprinted deep into his soul. It was the day he realized he loved her not as a friend, but as a woman. It was the day he realized he was jealous of her. Feeling the pain of the memories hit him, he shoved all the pictures back into the box and closed the lid. It was too long ago and they weren’t the same anymore. Back then, she wasn’t divorced and he wasn’t a father. Today, they were two very different people.             Lizzie. When he thought of her name, he felt his heart lurch into full protection mode. His

A Woman Worth Marrying Chapter 4

Evening fell and the world around them changed from sounds of muttering to a standstill. The house was quiet as a mouse as Jedidiah made his way up the stairs. His bride had gone to bed hours ago after dinner alone with him. The three others were already snoring and Jedidiah was the only one still up, having been the last one to take a bath. He was standing outside his door with his hand on the door as if trying to feel Annabella. He waited several seconds longer and then opened the door. It was dark and he was met with a chill. The fire had died down and she was probably curled up under those blankets shivering. He closed the door and stubbed his toe against the desk. He saw stars and cursed silently. It hurt like hell and he felt like punching someone. When the pain died down and he was able to walk, limp actually, he made his way to the bed. Sprawled across the bed was his bride wearing a thin cotton gown that barely covered anything. The light of the moon came in through the cu

A Woman Worth Marrying Chapter 3

The sun was setting as Annabella looked up from the saddle and toward the land where a few homes were built. The pinkish gray of the sky made the land look more welcoming than she expected. This here was the Devil’s Own and she was going to be here for a while. There was smoke coming from a house and she figured that to be the home of the woman Jedidiah called Mia. Her legs were sore and she was hungry. After the shock of finding out Ty wasn’t the man he was, she closed up her thoughts and fell silent. Even when Jedidiah accidentally brushed his fingers on the inside of her thigh when helping her up the saddle, she remained mute. For the life of her, she couldn’t figure out why she’d had such bad luck. Why did Ty do what he did? How could he betray her trust? Tears filled her eyes and she let them stream down her face. Behind her sat Jedidiah who had his arms around her waist. He’d been quiet since they began riding home, but she knew that although he remained silent, he knew her e
