Beating as One Chapter 5

Evening fell as Jed and Anne sat on their patio having dinner. They had ordered room service after a long day of touring Hawaii. They’d walked hand in hand together admiring the view, the tourists who they thought were ridiculous, and shared kisses whenever possible. All day long, Anne had forgotten how much fun it was to walk while holding hands with Jed. Now as they sat across from each other with a candle lit dinner, Anne felt herself spin with love. How was it that she thought she was ready to give this up? And for what? A misunderstanding.             “What are you thinking about?” Jed asked.             She looked up at him. “About us, about everything; being here has really changed how I’ve felt.”             He swallowed. “Do I want to know how you’ve been feeling?”             Shrugging, she replied, “I don’t know. Do you?”             “I’ll take my chances.”             “I know that we haven’t talked much. I know that we tried to avoid things by pushing

“It’s not your concern.”             Marcus shrugged. “Of course it’s not, but when I can’t seem to get you out of my mind, it becomes a concern of mine. I know you’re married, but you’re the saddest married woman I’ve seen since I arrived here. Isn’t this place supposed to be where lovers can’t get enough of each other?”             “Doing business here has clouded your thoughts, Marcus. Sometimes couples use this place as a last resort to fix their marriage. Where does it state that people who come here have to be in love with each other?”             Marcus touched her arm and she glanced at him. “I am sorry, Anne. The look on your face was so agonizing that I felt I needed to stop and speak to you. How is that a man who has your heart and soul not see how truly beautiful and free you are? If I had you, I wouldn’t spend a moment apart from you.”             She smiled and lowered her eyes. “Promises like those are too unreal, Marcus. Those promises of ‘I’ll never lea

“Is this what you truly want? It’s just simply a matter of disagreement. You sure about this?” Meena Ly asked as she stared at the red eyed Anne.             The afternoon sun’s lighting made Anne squint her eyes. She was sitting in her sun room wearing all black with her hair undone and her face free of makeup. Meena, her older sister, was sitting across from her wearing a pink floral dress, perfect for spring. She looked so put together, Anne felt jealous.             “It’s just a separation trial,” Anne said. “I want to try it. I’m tired of having to make it work when it doesn’t. I just want to have peace. I’ve forgotten how peace feels like.”             Meena walked to her and took her hands. “Anne, he loves you. He does. Have you forgotten about how you felt when you found out you were pregnant with Ryan? Who was there for you when you were alone? He was.”             Anne sobbed. “But now he blames me. That’s what hurts the most, Meena. He promised he’d never bla

Whispers on a Wind Chapter 5

“My mother says you’ve just finished your law degree,” Pa Nyia said as soon as they started walking outside. Brandon smiled. “Yes, but I hate being painted with that brush.” “Oh?” “It makes people afraid of me. They all think lawyers are liars.” She laughed, feeling suddenly comfortable. “You’re not the first. I suppose the first lawyer didn’t really set a good example, did he?” “I suppose not.” “So what kind of brush do you like to be painted with?” Brandon stopped walking and then he took her hand. He pulled her into his arms and turned her around to face her house. “You see your house? Do you see the line of the exterior of the frame of the door? The way how the light plays on the bricks when it shifts? It creates a shadow of light and dark. I love buildings. Each brick, each stone, has a secret that is hidden inside the cracks. When set right, it creates a flow of endless beauty.” “Wow, I have never heard of anyone describe bricks in that way before. Why d
